The title Dream & Intoxication originates from Nietzsche's The Birth of Tragedy, which begins with the Greek gods Apollo (the god of the sun) and Dionysus (the god of wine). Apollo and Dionysus represent the "world of dreams" and the "world of intoxication," respectively. In this exhibition, Wei-Hsiang HU explores the duality of dream (Apollo) and intoxication (Dionysus), interweaving and harmonizing them to connect everyday life with imagination and fantasy.

The exhibition is organized around two main themes: "Apollo's Daydream" and "Dionysus' Fantasies."

Apollo's Daydream
A daydream is a state of meditation or imagination while remaining awake. Drawing inspiration from Apollo's artistic power and aesthetic form, HU reflects on Apollo as the god who creates beautiful images, symbolizing the perception of beauty. Just as we are enchanted by beautiful dreams, this represents an illusion of beauty. Nietzsche once said, "Every human being, in creating the world of dreams, is entirely an artist."

Dionysus' Fantasies
Fantasies arise when desires emerge in situations that are impossible or contrary to reality, producing imagined scenarios that fulfill these desires. Under the influence of Dionysus, fantasies are filled with ecstatic passion and wild creativity. In this state of intoxication, one can transcend the constraints of daily life, experiencing a dissolution of boundaries between humans, the world, and even the line between dreams and reality.

"Dreams are the path to real desire." Through the perspectives of Apollo and Dionysus, HU uses animal imagery in dreams as a conduit for imagination, combined with staged visual representations on his fantastical stage. The works are largely inspired by personal life experiences, dreams, and fantasies. Some pieces use snapshots to capture daily appearances, while others depict imagined extensions of dreams.

From the Apollo perspective, HU explores the beauty of people, events, and objects around him. Through accumulated time and experience, dreams and fantasies allow him to extract coherence from fragments—spontaneous, unique, and complex—while the Dionysian spirit guides him to probe the essence of things. Through repetition, layering, and creation, his art allows viewers to confront illusions, organizing them into a personal vision of life and dreams.

The exhibition is arranged according to a color spectrum (red, yellow, blue, gray, and multicolor), surrounding the audience to simulate the spatial experience of an ancient Greek theater. The intent is for viewers not only to appreciate the works but also to perceive the emotional presence of others, fostering a shared state of immersion and empathy.
